This short course is specifically designed for owners of barefoot horses, who want to maintain their horse's hooves in ideal shape at all times. Practical and easy to understand, the course is suitable for everyone, regardless of your prior skills or knowledge.

Come and join us in the fascinating world of barefoot hoof care!

The course has been created by three long-standing barefoot hoof care professionals: Satu and Jiri Vainikka from Finland, and Minna Sarkkinen from Australia.

Read more about the course teachers in the About section.

This short course will teach you:

  • How you can easily promote your horse's hoof health between professional visits, by maintaining the hoof in its ideal shape and balance.
  • The basic hoof anatomy and parts of the hoof.
  • How the internal structures of the hoof dictate how the maintenance trim is done.

A weekly maintenance trim includes rasping and balancing the hoof wall, toe and heels. It benefits the horse by helping the hooves to stay in anatomically correct shape and balance, mimicking the wild horses' natural hoof wear. Hooves are meant to wear out at the same rate as they grow, but as this rarely happens with domesticated horses, we must use a rasp to keep the hoof growth in balance.

On this short course, we teach you the basic hoof anatomy, and through clear instructions and numerous videos, you learn how to do a weekly maintenance trim.

Trimming the bars and frogs is not included in this course, as it is part of a more comprehensive trim, which we teach on our Holistic Hoof Care for Horse Owners course.

"Trimming your own horse's hooves sounds daunting to begin with, but when things are explained clearly in a logical order, like this course does, it gives you the courage to have a go at doing the maintenance trim.

The best things about this course is that you can start by doing just a little bit, and as your confidence grows, you can trim more and more.

And my barefoot trimmer is really happy too, as now they come trim hooves that are maintained between visits, rather than just left to grow uncontrollably!"

Benefits of online learning

  • In a face-to-face course you are taught the information once and it's easy to forget things. But with an online course, you can revisit the materials as often as you want.
  • Videos, images and recordings help you learn and transfer the learning to practical level.
  • You can learn at your own pace and with the life time access to the course*, you can repeat sections of the course as many times as you want.
  • You can access the course on a computer, tablet or on your phone; so it's easy to check the trimming advice wherever you are, even when you're with your horse!

*Life time access means that as long as the course is run by us on this platform, you have access to it.

Our hope is that this short course will encourage owners to take an active role in their horse's hoof care and gives them the desire to study hoof care even further - maybe it even becomes a career for some!

Although anyone can learn the basics of barefoot trimming, we don’t recommend that you start trimming other people’s horses after completing this course. Trimming professionally requires years of in-depth study and practice. But the course is an ideal first step in learning about barefoot trimming, and if after completing it you want to learn more, our broader Holistic Hoof Care for Horse Owners is the perfect next step.
